A 70-year-old woman and two 12-year-old girls were killed when a passenger train hit their car, which was stopped on the tracks in south Louisiana.
Police identified those killed as Jayla Daigle, Trinity Schmidt and driver Phyllis Leblanc.
Two 12-year-old boys and another passenger in the car - 49-year-old Steve Leblanc - were critically injured in the crash.
The train hit their Ford Taurus at about 6pm local time on Tuesday in New Iberia, the home town of all six involved and about 115 miles west of New Orleans.
Amtrak spokesman Mike Tolbert said no-one on the Sunset Limited train was hurt. It was travelling from Los Angeles to New Orleans and was carrying 119 passengers.
