What do you do when lake water gets dangerously high? Just pull out the plug

An overflowing lake in the US recently got some very basic treatment to reduce its dangerously high water levels. And we have the results on camera.
Lake Texoma is one of the largest artificial lakes in the United States and is used to control floods, generates hydro electric power and generate river flows.
This amazing video by Edward Johnston shows the water draining out of the man-made lake, much like it would from a bathtub plug.
According to Johnston, who posted the footage online, a vortex formed as the water escaped was approximately eight feet across, capable of sucking in a full sized boat.
