Three prison officers were hospitalised when an 18-year-old convict resisted orders to return to his cell.
A fourth detention officer was also involved in the fracas that left one man with broken bones in his face and bleeding on his brain.
The psych inmate was crossing into a restricted area in the Arizona jail in the city of Buckeye.
When told to get back to his holding cell, the prisoner reacted violently and began wildly punching the officers around him.
Although a stun gun was used to sedate the convict, the inmate continued to attack and one of the officers was knocked out cold.
The prisoner is currently facing charges for the apparent unprovoked attack.
