The rescue was filmed by a passer-by who said the large buck had been desperately trying to get a foothold on the ice to pull itself free when the officers from the Estes Park Police Department arrived.

The deer can be seen frantically struggling to get out of the icy waters of the Big Thompson River but falls over and over again as its hooves jeep slipping on the ice.

The two officers arrive soon after the clip begins and slowly make their way across the snow covered bank towards the animal.

Working together, the pair manages to lasso the panicking beast and haul him out of the water.

As soon as the buck is free it scampers into some nearby bushes where its anxious family were waiting.

YouTube user DJ Walsh, who uploaded the video on Wednesday, wrote: “We see this buck and his family around our home often.

“Thanks for saving him EP-PD!,” he adds.
