TWO police officers have been caught on CCTV beating a homeless man in New York.

The shocking footage has gone viral, getting almost 200,000 views in the last 48 hours online.

It is reported that a security guard at a youth centre found the man asleep in the lounge and, believing him to be drunk, called the police.

A male and a female officer responded to the call, and are seen on the video approaching the man - reported to be Ehud Halevi, who had been living rough.

It then appears from the video that Halevi attempts to explain himself to the officers, before the male police officer takes out his handcuffs.

Halevi resists the officers’ attempts to cuff him, leading to the male officer punching him before launching into a sustained beating lasting several minutes.

Initially it appears the female officer is trying to retrain her colleague, however she begins to join in the attack shortly afterwards.

It was later revealed Halevi had permission to stay at the centre, and had been sleeping there for the previous month without any issues.

Halevi is now being charged with several offences including assaulting a police officer.
