Video: Belfast film-maker Marcus Robinson documents the transformation of The World Trade Centre
The Belfast-born artist and film-maker who has spent 10 years filming the rebuild of New York's World Trade Centre has been speaking about his unique project.
Marcus Robinson won a BAFTA award for ‘Rebuilding the World Trade Centre’, which has been screened all over the world including Seattle, Toronto, New York and now in Belfast as part of the Eastside Arts Festival.
Marcus has spent the last decade of his life filming the rebuild of the World Trade Centre in New York after the 9/11 attacks in September 2001.
He was invited to screen his unique film at The Strand Arts Centre in East Belfast as part of the Eastside Arts Festival.
Marcus said: “After the events of 9/11 it was really strange it was almost as if I felt a calling inside me to at least follow up to see if it would be possible to make a film. I wanted to try and make something that would be more like a parable about the human spirit and would be something that could symbolise diversity, beauty and the human capacity to triumph over adversity .”
He added: “What’s lovely is sharing the film with a live audience because it always generates a lot of questions.
“People always seemed to be surprised that the construction process is still so physical and hands on and that it’s not just all done by machines and technology.”
There are roughly another five or six years before construction work is complete at the World Trade Centre in New York.
Marcus said: “I’ve really loved working with the construction workers. The ‘dream’ is that when the project is finished there will be a final version of the film showing the whole process from 2006 to completion. That will be a very special moment.”
There are plans to have an exhibition in Belfast, a year from now, displaying the complete collection of Marcus’ drawings and paintings that he has been working on at the World Trade Centre site since 2006.
Being born in Belfast and growing up here, The Stand was the first cinema that Marcus ever went too as a child and for him to be here for this screening ‘is very special’ and he said ‘it’s great to share it with the people of Belfast and the EastSide Arts Festival’
