US comedian George Carlin dies aged 71

The leading US comedian George Carlin has died of heart failure at the age of 71.

The Grammy-winning comic passed away over the weekend after going to hospital in California complaining of chest pains.

Carlin was best-known for his political and black humour, gaining him a reputation as a cantankerous social commentator and scathing critic of human nature.

He once famously said: "I have absolutely no sympathy for human beings whatsoever . . . No matter what kind of problem humans are facing, whether it's natural or man-made, I always hope it gets worse."

Carlin's 'Seven Words You Can Never Say on TV' routine led to him being arrested in 1972 and also resulted in a Supreme Court ruling upholding the US Government's to censor the airwaves.
