At least two New York firefighters were shot and killed today at the scene of an early-morning house fire in the upstate suburb of Rochester
Two others were wounded. They were shot by a gunman as they responded to the scene of several house fires in Webster, New York,
Local law enforcement officials are now evacuating and searching homes near the site but have not yet turned up any suspects.
The deaths come just days after the shooting of 26 people, including school children aged just six, at Sandy Hook, Connecticut.
Rob Boutillier, fire marshal in the town of Webster, said the authorities believe the firefighters were shot shortly after getting out of their vehicles.
