Ariel Castro, the man accused of imprisoning three women at his home in Cleveland, Ohio, has pleaded not guilty to all 329 charges against him, including kidnap, rape, torture and murder.

Mr Castro (52), who was last week taken off suicide-prevention watch, stared only at the floor during a court hearing yesterday which lasted around a minute.

He is being held on an $8m (€6m) bond and faces the death penalty if convicted.

The 142-page indictment describes Mr Castro as a "sexually violent predator". The charges include 139 counts of rape from August 2002, when he allegedly kidnapped his first captive, to February 2007.

Mr Castro also faces two counts of aggravated murder for allegedly terminating one of his victims' pregnancies. (© Independent News Service)
