Three people have died and 22 been injured after a vehicle crashed into a crowd of spectators during the Oklahoma State University homecoming parade, police said.

Witness Dave Kapple told the Stillwater News Press that "people were flying everywhere" after the vehicle smashed into the crowd.

The university posted on Twitter: "Oklahoma State University is saddened by the tragic parade incident earlier this morning. Our thoughts & prayers are with those affected."

Oklahoma State was to play Kansas in the homecoming football game on Saturday afternoon.

Police in Stillwater where the crash happened are to hold a news conference about the incident.

The driver of the car that crashed into the crowd has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, police said.
