Suspect held as student injured in California school shooting

ONE student has been injured in a shooting at a rural high school in California and another has been taken into custody, US officials have said.

The shooting happened at about 9am local time at Taft Union High School, in a community of fewer than 10,000 people in the San Joaquin Valley, which is about 193km north-west of Los Angeles.

The student who was shot was flown to hospital. There was no immediate word on the victim's condition. It is believed the suspect is also a student.

It was reported that another person also suffered some type of injury in the incident yesterday, but refused medical attention.

The Taft shooting comes less than a month after a gunman massacred 20 children and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, before killing himself.

Meanwhile, some parents in Newtown, Connecticut, are calling for police to stay at town schools indefinitely, saying the sight of uniformed officers is a comfort to their children in a town reeling from last month's massacre.
