Suburban horror: Eight dead in California beauty salon shoot out
EIGHT people were believed dead and one other critically injured in a shooting outside a beauty salon near Los Angeles.
The gunman opened fire in the town of Seal Beach less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean.
Police arrested a man in a traffic stop half a mile from the shooting scene.
Witnesses described how the suspect was pulled from a white truck and ordered to get on his knees.
They said he was covered from head to foot in body armour, including on his chest, back and shins.
Bystanders also saw officers removing multiple guns from the van.
Police Sergeant Steve Bowles said a suspect was in custody and several weapons were seized.
One witness said the suspect was a heavy set Caucasian man with a goatee beard.
Details of the shooting, including a motive, were not immediately clear, and the dead had not been identified as customers, employees or bystanders.
The mass shooting happened near the Salon Meritage salon in a shopping centre off the Pacific Coast Highway.
One reviewer described it as a "beautiful, high class salon in a small town."
A customer, writing on Twitter, said: "I go to Salon Meritage all the time and I was just there last Thursday. I can't believe something so horrible happened there."
