FIFTEEN little faces smile for the camera a few short months ago, but today only one little girl is still alive after the Newtown massacre.
Of all the images to emerge since the horror of the Sandy Hook shootings, few convey the scale of the slaughter more poignantly than this class photo of the school's first year pupils.
Taken just a few months before Adam Lanza began his 10-minute rampage that only ended when he took his own life, it shows 14 six- and seven- year-olds who died in the attack. In the back row are (l-r) Catherine Hubbard, Ana Marquez Greene, James Mattioli, Grace McDonnell and Josepine Gay. At the front sit Jessica Rekos, Daniel Barden, Charlotte Bacon, Benjamin Wheeler and Caroline Previdi. The middle row contains, from left, Noah Pozner, Jack Pinto, an unnamed girl, Chase Kowalski, and Madeleine Hsu.
The unidentified child, who sits in the middle in the black top, is notable as the only one in the picture to have survived. She is thought to have escaped Lanza's onslaught by pretending to be dead as she lay among the bodies of her classmates.
