Shooting suspect in Texas Walmart store shot dead

A suspect has been shot and is apparently dead after police officers responded to a reported shooting inside a Walmart store in Amarillo, Texas.

The Amarillo Police Department released a statement saying hostages inside the store are safe and an investigation is under way.

Police said the incident "appears to be a workplace violence type event" and urged residents to avoid the area. There are no confirmed gunshot victims at the store, according to the statement.

The city released a statement saying emergency officials are "on the scene of an active shooter incident" at the store and there was no immediate word of injuries.

Authorities did not say what may have prompted the incident. Some nearby streets were closed as a precaution.
