Sarah Palin's husband remains in hospital with a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, and a broken collarbone and shoulder blade after a snowmobile accident in Alaska.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee said in a Facebook post that Todd Palin is in intensive care. She said he is going back into surgery to repair multiple fractures.

She described her 51-year-old husband as tough, saying that "once he's cognizant, he'll probably ask docs to duct tape him up and he'll call it good".

Mr Palin's father, Jim, said the Sunday night crash happened about 70 miles north of the Palins' home town of Wasilla.

Mrs Palin thanked supporters for their prayers, saying she appreciated the respect for her family's privacy.
