After twenty years of working, one postman decided the most fitting way to announce his retirement was through a handwritten letter.

The message from Michael Raymen, or Mike the Mailman as he is known, telling those on his round that he will be retiring after two decades with the US Postal Service became a viral sensation after it was posted by one of his customers to Reddit.

Push through dozens of letterbox’s in Glendale, Arizona, the loving note said: "It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have been your letter carrier for the past four years.

“Many of you have been with me for that long, some have not. I have enjoyed getting to know you and hope that I have provided a service to your liking.

"I have seen many changes over the years and have enjoyed and endured all of the triumphs and heartaches.

“I will miss all of you as you have seemed like a second family to me."

He ends his touching goodbye with a message from his late wife, who died this month last year, saying that she would agree it was time to “close this chapter of my life and start a new one”.

Posted on Imgur less than 24 hours ago, the letter has already been viewed more than 1.3 million times.
