A brave police dog could be left permanently brain damaged after he was shot multiple times in the line of duty.

Jethro, an Alsatian, was part of a police team that responded to an emergency call in Ohio yesterday.

The alleged shooter apparently fired his weapon at Jethro inside a convenience store where a robbery was in progress.

Jethro was left with critical injuries as a result.

The gunman was apprehended by police after he fled the scene and took cover at a nearby location, news channel WKYC reports.

Worryingly, vets have said he may have sustained severe brain damage in the incident.

A fundraising page was set up as news of his story spread, with people anxious to pledge support for the fallen animal.

There have been renewed calls for bulletproof vests for animals in the aftermath of Jethro's shooting.
