Zayn Malik, member of the popular boy band One Direction, ignited Twitter fury when he tweeted '#FreePalestine' to his 13 million followers on Monday.
The short tweet was re-tweeted over 140,000 times and many of his followers took to the social networking site to express their displeasure at the move.
One follower directed Malik to "do some research" before tweeting about sensitive issues, while another supported the star, replying "you made us all proud , Muslim or not we're humans and we need to support Palestine". Malik was brought up a Muslim, his mother having converted to Islam after meeting his father Yasser.
The Gaza conflict has dominated the media in recent weeks with Twitter providing a unique insight into the fighting.
One week ago, an identical tweet was sent from pop singer Rihanna's account, but was removed from her profile within eight minutes.
Reps for the singer claimed it was "never meant to be sent".
