A man shot dead by an escort is being investigated for the deaths and disappearances of ten women.
Neal Falls (45), from Springfield, Oregon, was killed on July 18 in an apartment in Charleston belonging to a woman he met on a website.
The escort, who has asked not to be identified, told detectives she shot Falls as he attempted to strangle her. He had a gun with him, but put the weapon aside as he tried to kill her. She managed to grab the gun as he was strangling her and shot him dead.
She told local media: "I could tell that he had already done something because he said that he was going to prison for a long time and that's when I knew that he was going to kill me.
"He just wouldn't let me get any air and so I grabbed my rake, and when he laid the gun down to get the rake out of my hands, I shot him, I just grabbed the gun and shot behind me."
Police in Charleston have confirmed they found a "kill kit" in the boot of Falls' car.
The "kit" included handcuffs, knives, axes, a sledgehammer, shovels, bleach and other cleaning supplies, NBC News has reported.
It was also reported that a list of names was found in the same vehicle.
This list is understood to have featured names of women who work as escorts and were advertising on the same website where he came into contact with the Charleston woman.
Lieutenant Steve Cooper told The Huffington Post: "Nearly immediately after he stepped into her apartment, he said 'live or die' and a struggle ensued.
"[Falls] laid his gun on a counter so that he could get a firmer grip around the victim's throat with both his hands and she was able to scoop that weapon up and fire one round, killing Mr Falls."
Police have subsequently determined that Falls' death was a "justifiable homicide".
Lt Cooper said detectives are now looking into the possibility that Falls is linked to the four unsolved murders of four prostitutes in Las Vegas a decade ago.
And the deaths or disappearances of six women in Chillicothe, Ohio, are also being examined.
Lt Cooper told another media outlet - WSAZ - that a national alert about Falls has been issued as judging by the items they found in his car, "it's hard to imagine this was only going to be a one-time event for him".
Authorities have said Falls was living in Henderson in Nevada around a decade ago.
Around this time, the dismembered remains of three women were found. Another woman had disappeared. The dead women were Jodi Marie Brewer (19), Lindsay Marie Harris (21) and Misty Marie Saens (25). Jessica Edith Foster (21) was last seen on March 28, 2006, at her home in Las Vegas. She has never been found.
In June, the FBI began an investigation into the deaths and disappearances of the six women in Chillicothe in Ohio.
Four bodies have been found in streams and creeks close to Chillicothe.
These women were: Tameka Lynch (30), Shasta Himelrick (20), Tiffany Sayre and Timberly Clayton. Wanda Lemons (37) was last heard from on November 1 last year and Charlotte Trego was last seen on May 3 last.
It has been reported that Falls had no criminal history.
It's believed he worked as as security guard and had convictions for minor traffic offences across several different states.
