A MOTHER has been sentenced to life in prison after murdering her 5-year-old son with an overdose of salt.
Kentucky woman Lacey Spears (27) intentionally made her son sick in a bid for attention from doctors and strangers on her online blog.
Garnett Spears died in January 2014.
Some experts had suggested she had Munchausen by proxy, a rare condition where parents harm their children in order to get attention.
However the prosecution decided not introduce the theory to the case.
Lawyer Patricia Murphy told the court: “The motive is bizarre, the motive is scary, but it exists.
“She apparently craved the attention of her family, her friends, her co-workers and most particularly the medical profession.”
A toxicologist found that food in Spears’ apartment was heavily tainted with salt – one ready meal contained the equivalent if 69 McDonald’s salt sachets.
