A MAN arrested for stockpiling weapons claimed he was doing so to fend off a zombie apocalypse.

Nelson Quinones (42) and his roommate Meritza Hay (37) were arrested in New York for illegally stockpiling weapons.

They were arrested last Friday following a police search of their home.

Officers seized two loaded pistols and 43 rounds of ammunition from the premises.

It is reported that Mr Quinones told officers that he was stockpiling the weapons the fend off zombies.

He reportedly told officers that the weapons were to protect him in case of a ‘doomsday’.

He was released earlier this week on a $20,000 bail.
