‘Lone wolf’ Muslim convert charged in New York terror plot
POLICE in New York have arrested a follower of late Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki on suspicion of building a pipe bomb.
Jose Pimentel (27) planned to use the bomb against US soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, it is alleged..
He has been charged with three terrorism-related counts and two other counts.
Pimentel is a US citizen born in the Dominican Republic. He was arrested in a Manhattan apartment while putting the bomb together after a two year surveillance operation.
Police described as a "lone wolf" who had converted to Islam and became a radical.
He has admitted that he "took active steps to build the bomb, and was "one hour away from completing it.
He was being watched by police since May 2009 and considered New York police cars, a New Jersey police station and a US post office among his potential targets.
If convicted he faces life in prison.
