Hitman labelled 'chronic liar' by Bulger's lawyers

A former enforcer for accused Irish-American mob boss James 'Whitey' Bulger has been grilled by Bulger's lawyer.

John Martorano has been questioned about varying stories he told over the years about killings he says were orchestrated by Bulger (83) and his gang.

Martorano, who has admitted killing 20 people, testified yesterday in Bulger's racketeering trial in Boston.

Bulger's lawyer branded Martorano a chronic liar, repeatedly pointing out inconsistencies between what he told investigators in the late 1990s and what he told jurors this week.

Prosecutor Fred Wyshak tried to rehabilitate him in the eyes of jurors. Mr Wyshak went through 11 murders and asked him if he and Bulger were involved in each. "Correct," Martorano replied each time.

Bulger is charged with playing a role in the killings of 19 people. He faces life in prison if convicted.

He and his lawyers deny that he was ever an FBI informant. His lawyers are expected to present him as a locally-beloved harmless tough guy, who lavished Thanksgiving dinners on his working-class neighbours.
