A gunman has surrendered after holding a top Kansas judge and his wife hostage over a child custody issue.
Authorities said the stand-off began shortly before 7am on Tuesday, when the man forced his way into 61-year-old Judge Wendell Wurst's Garden City home and confronted him and his wife.
Garden City police chief Michael Utz said the suspect ordered the judge to the ground and bound his hands. His 62-year-old wife was allowed to use the bathroom, where she called police on her mobile phone. She was later released.
The stand-off ended more than five hours later, when the gunman surrendered and Mr Wurst, Finney County's chief judge, was freed.
Police said the suspect was upset over a custody case handled by Judge Wurst. There was no immediate word about any charges following the incident.
