A GOOD Samaritan was stabbed to death after he defended a mother with her toddler from being mugged.
Troy Cansler was fatally stabbed in the car park of a supermarket in southern California after he rushed to help a 26-year-old mother and her daughter.
Krystina Hanrahan had just finished shopping and was on her way back to her car with her 2-year-old daughter when a mugger attacked her from behind.
The assailant attempted to snatch her handbag – stabbing the mother five times in front of her terrified child.
Cansler (47) was alerted by her screams, and chased after the mugger.
He caught up with the thug in the car park of a nearby restaurant and in the ensuing struggle was stabbed in the neck.
The father-of-one died from his wounds later that evening at a local hospital.
A 26-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident a short time later.
A vigil was held in his honour with Hanrahan fighting back tears as she called him her guardian angel.
Cansler is survived by his wife and 12-year-old daughter.
