The step-granddaughter of actor Morgan Freeman was stabbed to death on a Manhattan street at the weekend, according to police.
E'Dena Hines (33) was found shortly before 3am on Sunday in the Washington Heights neighbourhood of New York City. There were multiple stab wounds to her upper body.
She was transported to Harlem Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to a local hospital. Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect, and said the motive was unknown.
However, a witness told 'The New York Post' that the suspect was Ms Hines's boyfriend.
He screamed, "Get out, devils! I cast you out, devils! In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast you out," according to George Hudacko, (65), who saw the attack from his window.
Ms Hines was the granddaughter of Mr Freeman's first wife, Jeannette Adair Bradshaw, whom he divorced in 1979 after 12 years of marriage.
Mr Freeman released a statement saying he regretted that "the world will never know her artistry, and how much she had to offer".
"Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person," he said. "Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers."
Mr Freeman was forced to deny tabloid rumours of a romantic relationship between him and Ms Hines in 2012.
"The recent reports of any pending marriage or romantic relationship of me to anyone are defamatory fabrications from the tabloid media designed to sell papers," he said in a statement at the time.
"What is even more alarming is that these fabrications are now being picked up by the legitimate press as well."
Mr Freeman attended a birthday party on the island of Martha's Vineyard on Saturday night for Vernon Jordan, the civil rights activist. Barack and Michelle Obama and Bill and Hillary Clinton also attended. (© Daily Telegraph London)
