Former governor cancels Irish events to fly back to Maryland
FORMER Mayor of Baltimore Martin O'Malley has cancelled a series of events in Ireland and returned to the US.
O'Malley, who has Irish roots, is a potential presidential candidate for the Democratic Party and was due to speak at a business lunch hosted by ByrneWallace Solicitors in the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin yesterday.
The former Governor of Maryland was in London when a state of emergency was called in Baltimore and he said online: "I'm saddened that the city I love is in such pain this night. All of us share a profound feeling of grief for Freddie Gray & his family."
Event organiser Ray Gordon said that although he was disappointed with the cancellation, he understood entirely.
"We are very sympathetic to the situation. We'd like to look into bringing the governor over again another time, but nothing has been rescheduled," he told the Irish Independent.
