The footage has racked up over 100,000 views on Facebook and almost 50,000 on YouTube.

Customers have claimed the audio was broadcast loudly into the shop for five minutes at 10.30am on Wednesday in a Target at Campbell, California.

One mother, who had been shopping with her three-year-old twins, wrote on Instagram that her children asked her "is she hurt?" in relation to the female moans blasting through the shop.

She also wrote that employees were "scampering" around, trying to stop the audio.

One Twitter user claimed that there were "racist rants" broadcast on the intercom during that time, tweeting:

This is the second time this year porn sounds have been played in Target stores based in California. Earlier this year, pornographic audio was played in the Target at San Luis Obispo.

A spokesperson for the company told the Los Angeles Times that the incident is under investigation.
