Dramatic footage shows the moment the man - suspected of four hammer attacks on strangers in Manhattan - was shot by police.
Police released footage of the attack after he was approached by two uniformed police officers in the middle of a busy Midtown street .
30 year-old David Baril matched the description of the suspect in earlier assaults and was known to authorities
After attacking female officer Lauren O'Rourke with the hammer, he was shot four times by her partner in the arm, torso and head. Baril was said to be seriously wounded and treated in hospital.
The female officer was treated for minor abrasions.
Baril who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia is accused of four separate attacks in the city in which he used a hammer to strike people on the head from behind.
