Democrats put pressure on outgoing Speaker to step down

Democratic members of Congress defeated in last week's mid-term elections have written a letter to Nancy Pelosi, the outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, urging her to retire from the frontline, writes Toby Harnden.
Ms Pelosi (70) a liberal Democrat from San Francisco, announced last week that she was running for the post of minority leader despite the loss of more than 60 seats in her caucus, which was the worst election result since 1948.
Some senior Democrats worry that Ms Pelosi's continued presence as Democratic leader in the House would send a message that the party had not acknowledged the seriousness of their landslide defeat.
The draft letter, obtained by Fox News, adds "one mark of a strong leader is the ability to discern when it is time to pass the baton". (© Daily Telegraph, London)
