Casey Anthony, the Florida woman who last month was found not guilty of murdering her two year-old daughter, is the most hated person in the US. according to the results of a new poll.
Anthony, 25, who is currently in hiding after being released from jail in July, is more hated than former football star OJ Simpson and socialite Paris Hilton, in the study from E-Poll Market Research which tracks the popularity of celebs.
To the surprise of many pundits and Americans who had watched her six-week trial on TV, she was acquitted of murdering her daughter Caylee three years ago.
During the trial, it emerged she lied to the police about working at the Universal Studios theme park, about leaving her daughter with a non-existent nanny named Zanny, about leaving the girl with friends and about receiving a phone call from her.
Defence lawyer Lisbeth Fryer, had argued that Anthony's four convictions for lying to police should be consolidated into one count on the basis that the lies were all told in one conversation.
But, Assistant State Attorney Linda Drane Burdick disagreed, saying, "It is our position that there is a temporal break between the lies." Burdick said Casey's lies were intended to lead law enforcement "on a wild goose chase."
She said Anthony had time to pause and reflect about the lies and they did not occur in one single instance.
Earlier, Burdick said the state was interested in collecting investigative costs from Anthony related to the search for Caylee Marie in 2008.
Caylee was reported missing by her grandmother four weeks after she was last seen with her mother Casey at their Orlando home in June 2008.
During that period Cindy Anthony said her daughter had fobbed her off with excuses when she asked to see her granddaughter. When Casey’s car was retrieved from the tow yard her parents said it had a ‘smell of death’.
While her daughter was unaccounted for Casey Anthony partied and put pictures up on social media.
Caylee’s body was found buried in swamp land a mile from the Anthony home six months after she was last seen.
Prosecutors contended Anthony, then 22, suffocated Caylee with duct tape because she was interfering with her desire to be with her boyfriend and party with her friends.
Defence lawyers said the toddler accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool. They said that when Anthony panicked, her father, a former police officer, decided to make the death look like a murder.
They said that Casey had covered up the death due to her dysfunctional childhood that included sexual abuse by her father. George Anthony vehemently denied this allegation.
Despite public outrage at her acquittal, there is now talk of a book and possible movie deals for Casey Anthony. Some pundits are already predicting that Lindsay Lohan would be ideal to play the role of the troubled mother.
The poll showed 53pc of those questioned knew who she was and 94pc of them disliked her.
She was also considered "creepy" by 57pc of those polled.
