Candidate 'dabbled in witchcraft'

Christine O'Donnell, the surprise Tea Party victor of the Republican Senate primary in Delaware last week, has "dabbled in witchcraft".

Miss O'Donnell cancelled two appearances on political talk shows yesterday shortly before previously unseen footage from 1999 of her on the 'Politically Incorrect' television show was released by its host Bill Maher, a liberal comedian.

It was the latest in a string of unflattering videos to be spread by opponents of Ms O'Donnell, a political novice who defeated Mike Castle, the main Republican candidate, and is viewed by party leaders as too right-wing to win the Senate seat in such a liberal state.

In the clip, which was not broadcast at the time, Ms O'Donnell says: "I dabbled into witchcraft. I never joined a coven... I hung around people who were doing these things. I'm not making this stuff up."

Miss O'Donnell was laughing when she made the comments. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
