Canadian woman caught ‘pregnant’ with drugs in Colombia
A 28-year-old Canadian woman was held at Bogota International Airport after reportedly attempting to smuggle two kilos of cocaine in a latex pregnancy belly.
Social worker Tabitha Leah Ritchie was planning to leave Colombia for Toronto, Canada, with the drugs hidden in the fake pouch that was taped to her body.
However, in a routine airport search, a customs officer became aware that the unusually hard and cold ‘baby’ bump was not all it seemed.
Deputy director of Colombia's antinarcotic police department, Colonel Esteban Arias, said that investigations were ongoing as to who had manufactured the latex tummy.
It was the first time authorities had seen that method of transporting drugs, he said.
According to Colombian officials, up to 874 foreigners are currently being detained in the country, many for alleged drug offences.
