An American woman has sparked an animal cruelty investigation after a picture was posted online of her pet labrador with duct tape over its mouth.

The picture, captioned "This is what happens when you don't shut up!" was posted on a Facebook account operated by Katie Brown, from South Daytona.

The photo was shared more than 270,000 times and attracted widespread negative reactions from the online community.

In response to someone who commented "Katie assure everyone you did not do this", Ms Brown replied: "I can't lie I did it for 60 seconds. It was time out and no more barking."

Defending her actions, she later commented on her own picture to say: "Really people. Some dogs need a muzzle so they don't bite someone's child!"

The City of Daytona posted a series of updates on their Facebook page, thanking concerned citizens for bringing the issue to their attention. South Daytona referred to the incident as a case of "animal abuse" and advised they were working to locate the woman so that police could speak with her.
