AN ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl has died after a school fight with another pupil in her class that was reportedly over a boy.

Police in California confirmed that the girl, named locally at Joanna Ramos, died in hospital hours after the row broke out outside a Long Beach elementary school.

No weapons were used during the fight and neither girl was knocked to the ground in the fracas last Friday at Willard Elementary.

"They were fighting over a boy," said Stephanie Guadalupe, a friend of Joanna. "I told the teacher and she said she would talk to all the girls on Monday."

The fight took place in an alley way neat the school and other students witnessed it.

Joanna appeared to be fine afterwards, but later family members noticed she was unwell and brought her to hospital.

She underwent surgery, but died at 9pm on Friday.

"There are times when words do not convey the sense of sadness we feel," Mayor Bob Foster said at a press conference.

"This is one of those times."

A police investigation is ongoing and the girl who fought with Joanna Ramos has been interviewed.
