The American Pie star was slammed on social media after joking about Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 shortly after it was shot down Thursday over the eastern Ukraine border, killing all 295 on board.

The star, who has formally apologised for upsetting fans, hasn’t allowed the furore to impact his self-confidence.

“For everything that’s out there people are gonna have every range of a reaction, so you can’t please everybody I guess,” he told a TMZ photographer.

“The bottom line is that it’s a horrible thing that happened and I would never… I don't want it to be misinterpreted that I joked at their expense, so if I did that I do apologise."

Jason really wants to move on from the situation in order to refocus the public’s focus on other pressing matters.

“I just hope that people can now direct their attention that seems a bit more important and relevant,” he said.

Jason’s original joke was a tweet that read: “Anyone wanna buy my Malaysian Airlines frequent flier miles?”

After spending the day defending his remarks and attacking his critics, he finally backed down.

“Hey all- ok, so- I am deleting my previous tweets. People were offended, and that was not my intent. Sorry to those of you that were,” Jason wrote his 448,000 followers.

But initially, Jason didn’t take the comments lying down. Before deleting his tweets, the actor called his detractors “losers” and insisted those objecting to his attempt at humour had “issues”.
