Amazing scenes as 200 firefighters battle blaze inside factory encased in ice
MORE than two days after it first erupted, 200 Chicago firefighters were still tackling one of the biggest blazes the city has ever seen.
The firefighters had tackled the blaze which started in a timber warehouse in sub-zero temperatures on Tuesday evening.
The fire still raged on Wednesday morning, despite the city being in the middle of an icy snap.
Although fire-fighters thought they had it contained by Wednesday afternoon with the building encased in a huge slab of ice, the fire was rekindled on Thursday morning.
Efforts to put out the blaze were further hampered by temperatures of -12 which saw the department’s equipment freezing.
At its worst, the blaze could be seen up to five miles away and over one-third of the entire Chicago fire department were on the scene.
Nobody was injured in the blaze but one fire-fighter was taken to hospital after suffering a back injury.
