The incident took place last month, when an A321 plane was accidentally flown to Honolulu, despite not being certified to take extended flights over sea.

The error was picked up halfway throught the flight, the Washington Post reports, but the plane was allowed to continue its journey.

The return flight was cancelled and the plane was flown back empty.

“Immediately when we realise what happened, we notified the FAA and we are working and fully cooperating with them,” spokesman Casey Norton told the Washington Post. “We also have an ongoing, thorough review of our policies and procedures.”

The flight from Los Angeles to Hawaii over the Pacific Ocean takes more than 5 hours.
