Adnan Syed from Serial podcast wins new hearing allowing admission of new evidence
ADNAN Syed, who was the focus of the Serial podcast, has won a new hearing.
A judge in Maryland ruled that a new hearing into the case would take place allowing the addition of new evidence.
Adnan Syed was found guilty of the murder of girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999.
The case came to worldwide attention last year after it became the topic of the podcast.
Journalist Sarah Koenig and her team investigated the case again and spoke to witnesses and experts, and in the process raised huge doubts over how the investigation was carried out and the guilt of Syed.
Part of the his successful conviction was based on the evidence provided by mobile phone towers, which put his phone in the location near where Hae’s body was found.
However this evidence has subsequently been found to be unreliable.
Questions have also been raised over the State’s timeline of when Hae Min Lee actually died.
Also expected to be raised at the new hearing is an alibi witness who claims she saw Syed around the time the State alleged the murder took place.
This alibi witness was not contacted by Syed’s attorney during the original investigation, despite her making herself known.
