The bodies of Michael and Rosalia Juskin were discovered on the first floor of their Spruce Street home in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, about 18 miles from Manhattan. Police had been called to the property by the couple's son, who discovered the bodies.

John Molinelli, the Bergen County prosecutor, said the case was being treated as a "likely murder suicide". He added that it appeared that Mr Juskin had used an axe to kill his 88-year-old wife while she slept, before using a knife to take his own life in the bathroom. There were domestic issues, Mr Molinelli added. But the motive for the killing remained unclear.

According to neighbours Mr Juskin appeared younger than 100 years old and would be seen walking his dog in the area. Mrs Juskin would frequently be seen tending her garden or sitting on the porch. ( © Daily Telegraph, London)

Cartel kill 15 police officers in ambush

Gunmen ambushed a police convoy in Mexico, killing 15 state police officers and wounding five in the deadliest single attack on Mexican police in recent memory.

The attack happened late Monday in Jalisco. The state is home to a drug cartel known as Jalisco New Generation, which experts say is now among Mexico's most powerful.

Local media reported that a vehicle was hijacked, parked across the two-lane road and set on fire to force the convoy to stop.

A security expert said it was the first time a cartel appeared to be mounting a direct, head-on challenge to authorities.
