Syrian tanks attacked towns close to the Turkish border yesterday as the regime widened its offensive against protesters, despite the United States preparing to call on Bashar al-Assad to step down.
US President Barack Obama is expected to issue the first explicit demand for regime change in Syria within the next few days.
The announcement is to be accompanied by new sanctions by the US treasury department aimed at individuals in the Syrian government.
The Obama administration has been criticised for failing to demand Mr Assad's resignation earlier.
Outrage over the death toll in Syria, where more than 2,000 people are believed to have died since the uprising began in mid-March, has finally brought a change of approach in the US. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
