Barack Obama has confronted a dark chapter in America's past as he began a week-long trip to Africa with a visit to a slave port off the Senegalese coast.

Mr Obama, the first US president of African-American ancestry, took his family to Goree Island yesterday to visit the House of Slaves, an 18th century fort which was once an embarkation point for those destined for a life of slavery in the Americas.

"This is a testament to, when we're not vigilant in defence of human rights, what can happen," Mr Obama said at the 'Door of No Return', describing the visit as "very powerful". (© Daily Telegraph, London)
