Mubarak's wife taken to prison for 'abuse of position'
Suzanne Mubarak, the half-Welsh wife of the former Egyptian president, has been remanded to prison.
Mrs Mubarak -- whose Egyptian surgeon father met and married a Welsh nurse while training in Cardiff -- was put under formal investigation and remanded to the women's section of Qanater prison outside Cairo for 15 days.
She has been living in the family holiday villa in Sharm el-Sheikh since Hosni Mubarak was forced from power and left Cairo on February 11.
She is accused of having "abused her position for the illegal acquisition of wealth", the state news agency said.
The couple were interrogated for three hours on Thursday at the Sharm el-Sheikh hospital where Mr Mubarak, who is 83, is being held under formal detention.
The fall of Mrs Mubarak is a particular embarrassment for the family. While their sons Gamal and Alaa both prospered under their father's protection, building up business empires, Mrs Mubarak was portrayed as a philanthropist, heading many Egyptian organisations promoting the rights and education of women and children.
