Libya rebels close in on oil refinery
A fierce battle was under way last night for outright control of Libya's only functioning oil refinery as rebel forces took on Gaddafi loyalists entrenched in the complex, writes Damien McElroy.
The refinery at Zawiyah is one of the regime's last sources of petrol and gas.
Its capture would amount to a significant triumph for the rebels, who could store oil while effectively cutting off supplies to the Libyan capital.
The rebels have the facility surrounded.
However, heavy gunfire broke out at the refinery yesterday between the rebels and the remaining Gaddafi loyalists, around 100 of whom remain inside the complex. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
