France triples troops to prevent African 'genocide'
FRANCE will more than triple the number of its soldiers deployed to the Central African Republic, where fighting between Muslims and Christians has pushed the country to what Paris has said is "the verge of genocide".
The troop surge was announced as the UN warned that the country was "becoming a breeding ground for extremists". Muslim ex-rebels who fought to remove the former president and put their man in power have rampaged through mostly Christian areas.
The contingent of 400 French forces is to be boosted by another 1,000 soldiers, Jean-Yves Le Drian, the French defence minister, said. (Daily Telegraph, London)
