Colombian police say they have caught a 78-year-old Spaniard trying to smuggle cocaine out of the country in his belly.

Airport police in Bogota noted that Jose Molla Martinez seemed nervous as he waited to board a flight to Barcelona, according to a police news release.

It said he agreed to an X-ray which detected capsules of cocaine in his intestine, and they contained almost a pound (400 grams) of the drug.

He faces a possible eight years in prison if convicted of drug trafficking.

Police said he is the oldest foreigner caught as a drug mule, though an 82-year-old Colombian was arrested a decade ago.

Police delayed announcing Friday's arrest until a court confirmed the charges.
