An ambush in the Yemeni port city of Mocha has killed 44 anti-rebel fighters, according to security officials and witnesses.

The officials said that the ambush by Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, took place on Monday.

In a separate development, security officials said more than 20 Houthi fighters were killed on Monday and Tuesday in clashes in the central Marib province.

Yemen's fighting pits the Houthis and allied army units against forces loyal to the internationally recognised government, as well as southern separatists and militants.
