39 killed in mosque attack

FUNDAMENTALISTS stormed a mosque near Pakistan's army headquarters, killing up to 39 worshippers, including six military officers yesterday.

The gunmen sprayed the worshippers as they prayed and threw grenades before blowing themselves up, according to police. It was the latest in a wave of strikes by suspected Islamist fanatics that has killed more than 400 people in Pakistan since October.

Elvis's songwriter is mourned at 84

The songwriter behind the Elvis Presley hit 'It's Now or Never' has died. Aaron Schroeder (84) had been suffering from a form of Alzheimer's disease.

Schroeder was credited with writing 2,000 songs and wrote several other hits for Presley. He was also a producer, credited with helping the careers of Jimi Hendrix and Barry White. He also wrote the theme song for 'Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!'

Child killer is executed in Texas

A man has been executed in Huntsville, Texas, for raping and murdering Sarah Patterson (11), despite pleas from his lawyers he was too mentally impaired to qualify for capital punishment.

Bobby Wayne Woods (44) died after a court refused to stop the execution.
