100-year-old twins enter record books

Friday June 16 2000

BRITAIN'S oldest twins, Alice and Nellie Clarke, celebrated their 100th birthday yesterday after beating odds of 700 million to one to reach their centenary.

The identical twins, who in their youth lived the high life as wealthy debutantes, marked the milestone with a garden party at a retirement home in Eccles, Greater Manchester.

The double act were in fine form recalling their 100 years together as they laughed and joked with other residents at Stafford House, Ellesmere Park.

When asked where they worked Nellie joked: ``On our hands and knees.'' But in reality the pair lived a very privileged life.

On receiving birthday congratulations from the Queen, they said they were honoured and tearful but neither could believe they had reached 100 and said they felt as though they were still in their 50s.

Their birthday has earned them a place in the Book of Guinness World Records A spokeswoman for the publication said the chances of identical twins reaching 100 were one in 700 million.

Coincidentally, Britain's oldest man yesterday celebrated his 109th birthday yesterday and put the reason for his longevity down to insisting on a fry-up every morning.

Staff at the nursing home in Leicester, where Harry Halford has been living for the past three years arranged a party and among the guests was his great great-grandson, aged seven months.
