Iraq has seen an increase in violence in the run-up to parliamentary elections

At least 10 people have been killed and 18 others injured in a suicide attack on a police checkpoint south of Baghdad, Iraqi officials said today.

A police officer said the bomber drove his explosives-laden car into the checkpoint at the entrance of the southern city of Hillah, about 60 miles (95km) south of the capital, killing six civilians and four policemen.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figures.

Last month, a suicide car bomber hit a nearby checkpoint in same area and killed 36 people.
